The Ohio Department of Children & Youth (DCY) and the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) hired my client, Party411, to create their booths for the Ohio State Fair. Party411 asked me to design a touchscreen application showcasing DCY’s services within their under-the-sea theme, as well as a grocery store mural for ODM, whose booth theme focused on healthy grocery shopping.
ODM Services Touchscreen Application
The application was an interesting beast, as it required me to learn a program I had never used before: PandaSuite. I’ve used web builders in the past, but they all have their own quirks, and PandaSuite came with the added challenge of tutorials that were mostly in French. I was able to draw on what I’d learned from working with other platforms and figure it out along the way. Feel free to view a working preview of the app here: https://viewer.pandasuite.com/4vVPM2g8
An app “Easter Egg” built into the experience is that on the “Explore Our Services” page, the bottom-left fish takes the user back to the home screen (“Explore Your Area”). The bottom-right fish on the “Exit Survey” page does the same. This hidden bit of functionality was built in so booth workers could easily restart the experience if a visitor stopped part way through.

DCY Mural
The mural was a fun illustration project. The client wanted a very busy look and feel, similar to other grocery store murals, and asked that it showcase their new logo along with lots of fruits and vegetables, leafy greens, breads, meats, and cheeses. I had fun taking their limited color palette and expanding it with complementary greens, yellows, and light blues to create a happy, healthy scene. The challenge was fitting all of their required goodies into the illustration while still keeping the mural cohesive and visually engaging.
